From her Sydney studio, ceramicist Milly Dent creates handcrafted tableware that is as beautiful as it is functional. Milly launched her self-titled line in 2013 with the pure intention of producing natural, practical and thoughtful design for daily dining rituals.

What was the pivot point that set you on your current path?

My parents always backed me and my “making” from an early age, but moving to Sydney was pretty pivotal. The interesting encounters with interesting people and learning to appreciate and follow my curiosity set me on the path.

What’s the one piece of advice you’d give someone who’s going through their own transformation?

Be curious! I think curiosity is more powerful than passion, and less overwhelming. Follow things that interest you and let things happen as they should (but work hard). If it’s what you want to do then nothing will be able to get in the way.

Are you following the path of a trailblazer or being guided by a mentor?

Both! I’d say I’m being guided by unaware mentors, but I like to think that I’m also blazing my own trail. There’s so much I learn from my friends who are doing what they love, and I think working around the right people is just the best. I admire and absorb the energy given off by people who are unstoppable.

Where in the world would you describe as the place that speaks to you - your soul place?

The sea! Sitting above the ocean line at the cliffs and looking over the water is my ultimate recharge. Throw a few whales swimming north to have babies into the mix and I’m without a doubt in my soul place!

If you could do anything, what in the world would you want to do next?

Work on extra-large scale projects, loosen my practise, fully appreciate the process as much as the result. Learn to glass-blow. Scuba-dive and become an excellent underwater photographer.
