KHAI LIEWDesigner, Sydney

"After years as a specialist conservator of Australian colonial furniture I began to draw on this experience to design my own work, informed by the old and the new, the regional and the international. My work sits at the confluence of beauty and utility. In my hometown of Adelaide, I was warmly welcomed as an immigrant and was encouraged and supported by its community, personally and professionally. My advice: Perceive without prejudice."

The production of Khai Liew's small editions and one-off furniture commissions takes place in his Adelaide studio and workshop, founded in 1996. Liew's designs have been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Design Museum, London and the Triennale di Milano. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Australia, Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, Art Gallery of Western Australia and Art Gallery of South Australia. Liew is Adjunct Professor, School of Art, Architecture and Design, University of South Australia and a Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia.
